Herongate Athletic Sunday 1st started as Jets F.C in 1991. The Club was formed By Bill Brown in Basildon and took its name from Romford Jets F.C who were the partnering Club at the time. The Club was part of a T.V documentary on BBC2 and got to go to wembley and pick up the famous F.A Cup which was handed over by our very own Queen for the Day Mrs Barker (Greg Barker a current players Mum). In 1997/1998 Bill Brown stepped down as manager and Dave Cooper took control. One of the most memorable games was then brought to life with Jets going to a game with only 8 men and still coming away victors.
From then on it was a rough then steady ride just like a rollercoaster and playing on Hollycross playing fields then on Jolly Friars playing fields nothing looked certain for the teams future.
In 2002 Herongate took Jets under their wing giveing them fantastic facilities for training and Games. With a permanent home it was only ever going to be up from now on.
The Lads who were starting their first year in Basildon Sunday League Mens Division 2 Ended the season with just Learning what the leagues all about.
The Next few seasons proved different.
Being Cup Runner Ups, then League Runner ups, Then League Cup winners. And every year since they have been promoted and are now in the Bsaildon Sunday League Premier Division.
Following 2 Great seasons in the Basildon SUnday League Herongate Athletic Got Relegated and has to rebuild a squad to compete in the Basildon Sunday League Division 1, After a testful season Herongate also got relegeated again and got moved into the Division 2 and is now building again to make sure they go back upto the top and compete in the top flight
HERONGATE ATHLETIC FOOTBALL CLUB
A brief history
The exact day that the club was formed is not known but a resident of Herongate has produced a photograph (this now hangs in the small bar) dating back to the 1908/09 Season. Our playing record was: -
PLAYED 23 : WON 16 : LOST 3 : DREW 4. GOALS FOR 90 : GOALS AGAINST 23
(So, no problems scoring that year then)
Quite when Athletic was introduced to our name is also not known and, in fact, the whole of our early history is sketchy until the 1960s. This period represent more then half of the clubs current lifespan so if anybody reading this is able to help with any historical information then please do contact us.
By the 1960s we were running two Saturday teams; both played on the local INGRAVE JOHNSON School playing field. Towards the end of this decade our then chairman negotiated a lease with a local landowner for the area of land we still use. At the same time a wooden construction Public House (the Oakwood) became available in Loughton and Club members dismantled and transported this building before re-E******N where it still forms the major part of our Clubhouse.
During the 1970s a third Saturday team was added and also a Sunday side. Extra dressing rooms with a plunge bath were built again by club members.
In the 1980s we further improved the facilities and four new changing rooms were constructed along with Referees and Physios rooms. All are still in use today. The playing side was further strengthened by the introduction of one Saturday veterans (over 35) team and much more recently another. We are also currently running three male and two female Youth teams with plans to introduce Mini-Soccer facilities for our Centenary Season 2008-09.
During our history we have enjoyed football success at every level; a walk through out entrance hall and main corridor with testify to this.
